Federico Fernandez on Newcastle takeover target and first meeting with Amanda Staveley

Federico Fernandez has outlined the responsibility of the Newcastle United squad in delivering on the sky-high expectations generated by the Saudi-backed takeover.

The Magpies defender has also discussed his first conversation with part owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi and the consortium's vision.

United face Tottenham on Sunday and are still searching for their first win of the season, but the takeover has led to speculation over transfers and a potential new manager dominating the headlines.

Steve Bruce looks set to take charge of his 1,000th match in management this weekend, despite widely expecting to depart in the near future.

A host of high-profile names - some more fanciful than others - have been linked with a switch to St James' Park in the upcoming transfer windows.

Fernandez welcomes the prospect of significant investment into the squad, and says it is up to the current squad to deliver in the coming months to allow the new owners to launch their ambitious plans for a rebuild.

He told Spanish title AS via SportWitness : “It is up to us to win games again and maintain a good level to attract the players who can make us better.

“The city was revolutionised by this news and by everything it generated worldwide. These are times of change in which we look to the future with great enthusiasm."

Club footage of Staveley and Ghodoussi's visit to the Benton training base this week showed Fernandez's introduction to the part owners, along with several other first-team stars.

The defender has confirmed news of the takeover caught the squad by surprise, and says the players have been given the same message as fans on the consortium's long-term strategy.

Fernandez added: “We saw it in the press and later, on Monday, we had the opportunity to meet the owners after training. They agreed to return soon because now there are many who are with the national teams.

“They told us that they want to have a talk to convey what they have already said publicly: that it will be something gradual that will take time.”
