Federico Fernandez assesses difficult challenge of stopping Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Federico Fernandez is under no illusions about the task ahead of Newcastle United's defensive rearguard on Monday night at the Emirates Stadium.

The Magpies already have a poor record in London but now face an Arsenal side with Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in sparkling form after scoring 36 goals between them.

As United look to close in on Premier League safety, Fernandez said: "We know that they're a team with a lot of quality, especially up front.

"For us, it has to be the same idea we've played with for the last couple of months.

"We know what we need to do and people are approaching this with confidence.

"The important thing is to go there and compete.

"We will look to start the game well and try to take something."

When asked specifically about how to deal with Lacazette and Aubameyang, the Toon defender said: "You need to respect them.

"Just look at their numbers and what they are doing at the moment.

"They have quality, pace and good movement in between the lines.

"We need to be careful and not give them much space.

"When we have the ball we have to make sure we create enough chances to score a goal."

But Newcastle aren't exactly going to the Emirates Stadium without their own goal threat in Salomon Rondon - who has bagged 10 goals for a United team that have had a challenging campaign.

Fernandez added: "He's doing a really good job and has been fantastic for us.

"He fights with the defenders and gets goals.

"He is doing his best and that's very important for us.

"For us to have somebody up front like him you can deliver to is important as he's always in a good position or in the right place."
