An Australian-first, high-performance electric motorbike and seaweed to reduce methane from cows are among 10 innovative projects to receive federal funding.
The projects will share in almost $6 million from the government's Commercialisation Fund.
"These grants enable businesses to undertake commercialisation activities such as research and development, investing in technologies that will assist them to scale up their operations, and securing further investment to grow even more," Acting Industry Minister Angus Taylor said.
Melbourne-based Savic Motorcycles has received $657,481 to complete the development of its electric motorcycle to roadworthy certification.
The bikes can hit 100kph in 3.5 seconds and are promoted as costing 80 per cent less to run than a standard machine.
Tasmania's Sea Forest has received $675,000 to help it establish a processing and manufacturing facility for its seaweed product, which when included in very low quantities as a feed supplement greatly reduces the production of methane from livestock.
Sydney-based Commonwealth Steel Company will use $750,000 to recycle tyres, conveyer belts and gumboots to generate carbon and hydrogen, and incorporate these into the steel manufacturing process.
The process will reduce the company's carbon footprint and improve sustainability and productivity.
The grants range from $100,000 and $1 million, with funding to make up no more than 50 per cent of total project costs.
