Fed up schoolkids tackle litter and pick up everything from TVs to a bouncy castle

Fed up school kids who were sick of seeing litter lying around decided to team up to do something about it.

Pupils from two Livingston schools joined forces to tackle issues with litter spoiling nearby woodland areas.

S1 pupils from Inveralmond Community High and P7s from Harrysmuir Primary spent a day litter picking in woodland in Ladywell –collecting an astonishing 133 bags of rubbish in just one day.

Supported by the West Lothian Litter Pickers and the Woodland Trust, the hard-working pupils also helped remove a number of other larger items including chairs, burnt-out bins, TVs, a glass table top and even a bouncy castle.

Inveralmond head teacher Suzie Young said: “Many thanks to all the young people from Inveralmond
and Harrysmuir on their incredible efforts to clear up our local woodlands.

“It really helped demonstrate the importance of looking after our local environment and the terrible impact of dropping litter.

“Activities like this litter pick help our young people put our values and vision into practical action that benefits the whole community that we are all part of.

“We aim to continue to work with the local community to ensure that young people take part in litter picks, and have further opportunities to learn outdoors.”
