Fed up residents ask South Lanarkshire Council to resurface paths and roads

Residents of Harrington and Cunninghame Road in East Kilbride are petitioning for roads and paths there to be fully resurfaced.

Locals have said the road is in a “dangerous condition” and it has led to flooding in the streets and nearby gardens.

Matthew McCabe, lead petitioner, wrote to the council stating: “The roads are in a disgraceful condition.

“The streets are in a shameful dangerous state, complained about for decades.

“We, the residents, are not prepared to accept inaction and to be fobbed off with excuses any longer, the fact remains these streets are in a terrible state and need immediate repair.”

The Roads and Transportation Services (RTS) have been in correspondence with Mr McCabe and other residents regarding the conditions of the roads and pavements since August 2019.

It has been agreed by the RTS that both roads should be resurfaced but due to a prioritisation system that is in place they do not meet the criteria for this year.

Harrington and Cunninghame Road won’t be considered until the 2022/2023 prioritisation programme, which will be confirmed in March next year. The footpaths are not considered to be high priority at this stage.

Councillors at the planning committee meeting on Monday, November 22, agreed to refer the issue back to the roads department to reassess the state of the pathways and to establish whether it should be a higher priority.

The prioritisation system that is in place considers locations across South Lanarkshire each year which require improvement, and looks at the general condition of a road and its traffic flow.
