Feckless Midlothian fly tippers dump pile of old mattresses over side of bridge

A Midlothian resident has hit out after a pile of mattresses were dumped over the side of a bridge by fly tippers.

The pile of old bedding was discovered by Gorebridge local Gavin May when he was taking the dog out on Tuesday morning and passed under the Shank Bridge on the A7.

A regular spot for Gavin to walk his pooch and cycle, he initially thought the mattresses were pieces of aluminium from the roof of a caravan. But as he got closer it became evident that someone had pulled up on the bridge above and thrown them over the side.

Posting photos online, Gavin and dozens of fellow residents were outraged by the latest blight on their community - not least as a rubbish tip is just up the road from the bridge.

Gavin added: "I'm out that way a lot and always use that route. When I was walking the dog in the morning I noticed something had been dumped but thought it was a pile of aluminium.

"When I got closer it was clear that someone in a van had stopped on the bridge and just unloaded about six or seven old mattresses over the side, something I've never encountered here specifically.

"It must have happened in the last few days because they looked soaking. Sometimes you come across piles of rubbish left on the back roads around the town but it is even more frustrating as there is a tip just down the road.

"It is something that happened a lot during lockdown and it's a shame to see it happening again. The people responsible probably travel further to fly tip than they would just going to the rubbish depot."

After being contacted by Edinburgh Live , Midlothian Council confirmed they are aware and will have the mattresses removed as soon as possible.
