'Feckless' cyclist mocks new Highway Code rules by riding slowly and taking selfies

A cyclist has been caught making a mockery of new changes to the Highway Code by riding at a dangerously slow pace and taking selfies.

In footage recorded near London Bridge, a male cyclist can be seen taking "full advantage" of a change to motoring rules which allows them to ride in the centre of the road.

And as he does, the reckless rider is also seen pulling out in front of a black taxi and almost knocking over another cyclist.

He then continues to show flagrant disregard for other road users - making it impossible for any to overtake him.

Then, with motorists backed up behind him, he even slowed down to take a selfie before whizzing off and almost crashing into a commuter as he ran a red light.

The driver who filmed the incident told The Sun: "Cyclist riding the middle of the road despite having a cycle lane by him, making it impossible to overtake.

"At the same time taking advantage of the no punishment on riding without any hands on the handlebars to steer the bicycle as his hands busy on his mobile phone taking selfies and with the other hand holding what appears to be a takeaway."

The major Highway Code revamp came into effect last Saturday and is aimed to boost protection for cyclists and pedestrians.

But motorists have been fighting back and calling for the new laws, which they say are unfair, to be scrapped.

The new guidance means traffic should give way when pedestrians are crossing or waiting to cross at junctions.

Cyclists are advised to ride in the centre of lanes on quieter roads, in slower-moving traffic, and when approaching junctions, to make themselves as visible as possible.

A hierarchy of road users has also been introduced, meaning someone driving will have more responsibility to watch out for people cycling, walking, or riding a horse, and cyclists will have more responsibility to be aware of pedestrians.
