Fears travel and flight restrictions could return after huge Covid surge in Europe

There are fears that travel restrictions could be brought back for going to and from Europe after several countries have seen a huge surge in Covid cases.

A three-week partial lockdown began in the Netherlands over the weekend, while unjabbed people in Austria can only leave their homes for essential reasons.

Currently 10 EU countries including Poland, Greece and the Netherlands are deemed of "very high concern". A further 13 are of "high concern" including Germany and Austria.

Europe currently accounts for more than half of the average seven-day infections globally and about half of latest deaths - the highest levels since April last year when Italy saw a peak.

Experts say the UK appears to be avoiding a similar peak because it eased lockdown restrictions in the summer.

However, politicians are concerned over the rising cases in Europe and warned over Covid measures returning, including travel restrictions.

One of Nicola Sturgeon's key advisers on the Covid pandemic said rising cases in Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe, is worrying, and has suggested Scotland could see more 'protections' put in place.

Professor Devi Sridhar said the vaccine passport scheme could be extended to more venues and the "tightening of indoor settings where it's risky" similar to countries abroad.

The First Minister is set to hold a Covid update this week to address the ongoing coronavirus situation.

It comes after Boris Johnson warned over the 'storm clouds' gathering over Europe.

Speaking on a visit to a pharmacy in Bexley and Old Sidcup he said: "I'm seeing storm clouds gathering over parts of the European continent.

"And I've got to be absolutely frank with people - we've been here before, and we remember what happens when a wave starts rolling in."

He added: "We have got a situation now where there is no question that there is a wave of infection coming across Eastern Europe.

"We are seeing numbers rise in Germany very steeply."
