Fears train timetable changes could cause more chaos for Monday morning commuters

Commuters in Leeds and across the north of England are being advised to plan ahead and check their journeys ahead of the first working day since new timetables were unveiled across the north of England.

A number of changes came into effect today (Sunday, May 19) on TransPennine Express and Northern Rail services, although there will be a far greater demand on the networks as the new timetables attempt to deal with people heading to work on Monday morning.

Last year, Northern introduced the biggest timetable change in decades with disastrous consequences, as thousands of passengers were left stranded, wreaking havoc across the rail network.

Among the New timetable for Transpennine Express from Sunday - check your route here come into effect from today are the Manchester Piccadilly to Leeds service and the route from Hull to Manchester via Leeds.

Leo Goodwin, managing director for TransPennine Express, said: “At the end of last year we made some changes that have significantly improved performance and made our services much more reliable.

“This May, we are going to take the opportunity to make additional refinements to our plans that build on the improvements already made.”

Cyclists are also now being offered the chance to book their bikes onto trains up to 10 minutes before departure via WhatsApp or social media - an improvement on the previous timescale of 24 hours in advance.

Northern have also introduced new services on its lines from today.

These include an increase in the number of Leeds to Harrogate services to three trains an hour and a brand new hourly direct service linking Leeds and Chester.
