Fears staycations will put pressure on water supplies

Environment bosses have warned that the growing popularity of UK holidays will put pressure on water supplies this year.

And it is even feared the UK could face a drought as holidaymakers have no alternative but to swamp the British holiday market for their getaways.

UK travel companies have seen a massive rise in bookings already, particularly for the later summer months, MirrorOnline has reported.

But the "record high" number of bookings has sparked fears it could place too much pressure on water supplies.

There are particularly concerns in the north west of the country.

Fish have already had to be rescued from river beds in Shropshire.

May has been the driest month on record.

Environment Agency chief Harvey Bradshaw, head of the Government’s National Drought Group, said: “We are working with water companies to encourage the public to use less water while also following government hand-washing guidance.”

The group warned of health problems for animals if drinking water is unavailable or disrupted.

Lib Dem MP Layla Moran said: “A drought this summer would be a disaster for farmers.

“The Government needs to make sure we are properly prepared.”
