Fears stabbing of Toxteth 'gentle giant' was targeted attack

There are fears the brutal murder of a man in a Toxteth street was a targeted attack.

Emergency services were called to Bentley Road at 1.30pm on Thursday to reports that a young man had been stabbed in the neck .

The victim, a man in his 20s, was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

A murder investigation was launched into the incident, which happened on a residential street in broad daylight.

Chief Superintendent Matt Boyle said: "An investigation is under way to uncover the full facts around this case.

"At this time we believe it was possibly targeted.

"We have currently got a large crime scene in place and crime scene investigators are analysing that area.

"A post mortem will be held later on today."

People who knew the victim have described him as a "gentle giant" amongst the countless devastated tributes posted to social media.

Many also expressed their horror at the savage incident that saw dozens of police and forensic officers flood the street where the stabbing took place.

Pictures taken at the scene of the murder on Thursday afternoon showed multiple forensic vans parked outside the cordon as detectives arrived to begin their investigation.

Chief Supt Boyle added: "There will be an enhanced police presence at that location to reassure the community.

"It is absolutely essential that any witnesses, or anyone who may have phone or dashcam footage that could help with the investigation, come forward."
