Fears Spain could be put back on quarantine list for Edinburgh holidaymakers as coronavirus cases soar

Quarantine-free travel for Scots holidaying in Spain could be at risk after a spike in the country's coronavirus cases.

From tomorrow (23 July), tourists returning from Spain will not be required to quarantine after arriving back in Scotland.

The change was given the green light by the Scottish Government following a review of infection rates in mainland Spain and the Spanish islands.

However, the top summer destination could be removed from the UK's green list of travel-safe countries following a surge in coronavirus cases.

This would mean that anyone who travels to Spain would need to quarantine for 14 days when they return.

It comes as cases of coronavirus have tripled since Spain's lockdown was lifted and it reopened to tourists, with the country recording a sharp rise of 4,581 new cases from the weekend period on Monday, reports  The Mirror.

Clusters of the virus have raised concerns after eight hotel workers tested positive for the virus on the Spanish holiday islands of Formentera and Menorca.

Meanwhile, there are currently 14 active outbreaks of coronavirus Balearic Islands, with just over 70 people affected.

According to The Sun, the UK Government could move to blacklist Spain within days. Though, the Scottish government has control over the country's public health measures and would be able to make an independent decision on the matter.

Previously, the Scottish Government approved the majority of "air bridge" destinations set out by UK ministers but had omitted Spain from its list over concerns about the prevalence of coronavirus in the country. t
