Fears Spain 'could be next to join France' on so-called amber plus list

Spain is in danger of being added to the so-called 'amber plus' list alongside France amid concerns over the Beta variant, according to reports.

The country recorded 162 positive cases that have been attributed to the mutant strain of Covid in the weekend to July 1.

That figure is said to represent 8.8% of infections recorded on GISAID, which maps variants of concern.

Concerns are growing over the prevalence of the Beta variant, which was first discovered in South Africa.

Early studies suggest that the strain could potentially evade some protections offered by the vaccines currently approved for use.

On Saturday, the Scottish Government announced that all travellers - including those that have been fully vaccinated - will have to self-isolate for 10 days when returning from amber listed France.

This is despite the rule change on fully jabbed travellers being able to bypass the quarantine measures when return from amber countries.

And it appears that there are similar fears over the emergence of the strain in Spain.

The Sun is reporting that UK Government officials are keeping a close eye on the country and could potentially announce new measures within the coming weeks.

The Scottish Government, which has largely followed decisions made south of the border on international travel, is expected to give its next update on the traffic light system at the start of next month.

Speaking after the decision on France, Transport Secretary Michael Matheson said: “Nobody wants travel restrictions in place for any longer than is absolutely necessary.

“We have been clear that the green, amber and red lists can change at short notice. It is important we act quickly to limit the risk of importation of variant of concern which could undermine the rollout of our vaccine programme.”

New rules came into force on Monday which allows fully vaccinated Scots to bypass quarantine rules when arriving in Scotland from an amber list country (PA)

Holidaymakers were seen pouring into Scots airports on Monday after the rules on amber listed countries changed.

Scots who have received both doses of the vaccine will not have to quarantine on their return - with France being the only exception.

Travellers will still need to take a coronavirus test before travel into Scotland and within two days of their return.

The Scottish Government has continued to urge Scots against making non-essential travel overseas at this stage of the pandemic.
