Fears over 'dangerous' road after car crashed into front of Nottinghamshire house

Residents have raised safety concerns over a busy road in Nottinghamshire after a car crashed into the front of a house. A cream coloured Renault was driven into the front garden of a property in Moorbridge Road, Stapleford, causing significant damage to the vehicle and a brick wall.

No-one was arrested or injured due to the incident, which happened at around 7am on Monday, June 5. However, residents believe it is part of a wider problem.

Speaking on Tuesday (June 6), a spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "We were called out to this crash at 7.10am yesterday. Thankfully no injuries reported. Road wasn’t blocked and no arrests as things stand."

Is the government doing enough to help with the cost of living? Let us know

A car was crashed into two houses on the same road in February last year. “So many cars come along this road, they just go really fast and, given that there’s houses and people trying to park and cross the road, it’s just not very safe," said Jo Dunne, 56.

“The canal runs along here, it’s the national cycling network route, there’s fishermen, it’s a nice place to go for a walk but there’s nowhere to cross safely here. It’s ridiculous that it joins up as its so dangerous, it’s a hazard and so traffic calming measures would be a good thing.”

Independent Councillor Richard MacRae, who represents Stapleford North at Broxtowe Borough Council, has launched a petition to convince Nottinghamshire County Council to introduce traffic calming measures. "The residents have had enough," he said.

"We are asking them to look into traffic calming measures, they have a responsibility. Something's got to be done, one accident is one too many, it's getting a joke now. They have got to do something, it's getting busier and busier.

"A lot of people walk down there to access the canal, a lot walk down with fishing gear or go down on their bikes. It could've easily been worse and god forbid anyone gets run over.

"Maybe highway authorities should be looking at a junction 25a for the motorway. It would take the pressure off small roads in our town, it wasn't built for all these vehicles."

Cllr MacRae said a lot of the traffic was due to lorries going to and from the Stanton Park development - a 180-acre site set to become an industrial warehouse site.

"It's getting bigger and bigger and more HGVs are using the road," he said. "I don't know what the answer is but that's what the county council's traffic team is for."

Edwin Shipman, an 89-year-old retired joiner who cycles in the area, said: “I’ve just been to Sandiacre and I just go by the canal because it’s safer. The state of the roads are terrible.

“It is a fast road, I must admit, you get those crazy car drivers going too fast. Maybe a 20mph limit would work. Anything would help."

“I’ve never seen anything happen but your always at risk around here anyway because it is quite dangerous”. Speaking on Tuesday (June 6), a highways manager from Nottinghamshire County Council said: “We are concerned to hear about reports of a collision yesterday morning on Moorbridge Lane in Stapleford.

“We do have interactive speed signs in place on Moorbridge Lane, but as with all speed limits, we rely on road users to drive appropriately and respectfully within the limit. Where speeding does occur, it is an enforceable offence and tickets are issued by Nottinghamshire Police.

“Once received, the petition will be considered alongside any police reports and discussed at a future Transport and Environment Cabinet Member meeting.”
