Fears over alien species on Galapagos Islands

The chain of islands where Charles Darwin formulated his theory of evolution is under attack from alien invaders.

More than 50 non-native species have been brought to the Galapagos Islands, a study has revealed.

Scientists documented 53 invaders in the waters of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador.

One species, the bryozoan amathia verticillata, is known for fouling pipes and killing seagrasses.

Lead author James Carlton said: “This discovery resets how we think about what’s natural in the ocean around the Galapagos and what the impacts may be on these conservation areas.”

The study was published in the Aquatic Invasions journal.
