Fears of Notts County crisis grow after glory of FA Trophy victory

Notts County are facing a potential defensive crisis after Ben Turner suffered a calf injury which has left the club with just two fit centre-backs.

The former Cardiff defender was set to start the Magpies' 3-1 win over Oxford City at the weekend but had to pull out of the game after injuring his calf in the warm-up.

Connell Rawlinson was then forced into the heart of the defence, but boss Neal Ardley had admitted in the build-up that he had jarred his knee in last Tuesday's goalless draw at Stockport.

But the former Port Vale defender came through the game okay although there are concerns about Turner's injury which Notts will now assess in the next 48 hours.

It is hoped the injury is not too severe given Notts only have Rawlinson and Alex Lacey as the only centre-backs on the books.

Assistant manager Greg Abbott is hoping the problem is not a serious one and did not rule out a potential raid on the transfer market to help ease the worries over the lack of depth ahead of a hectic schedule.

"Let's just let him settle down Monday," he said.

"But we can't go into the next period without another centre-back.

"We'll have to have a look at that.

"But I just feel for the big man. He's been brilliant. He's great around the dressing room and the players love him.

"He's massive to us as support to the staff.

"I was really low before the game because I feel we need him.

"We need Connell we need Ben, we need Alex. They are our three centre-backs and they're all capable players.

"Hopefully, it's not bad, but we'll have to look at it Monday or over the weekend."
