Fears for I'm A Celebrity stars after 'killer pumas on prowl' near castle

There are fears for the I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! campmates after reports that 'killer pumas' could be on the loose near the castle.

The ITV show has welcomed its first 10 stars to Gwrych Castle near Abergele in North Wales and while they try to get some much needed sleep, the area around the walled castle may be stalked by some big cats.

There have been several reports in the past 12 months of 'large black cats' in the area where the show is being filmed and there have been paw prints discovered seven months ago in the grounds of the 19th-century castle.

The prints have been dismissed as not being that of a large dog, as there are no claw marks and it is known that pumas retract their claws when running, The Sun has reported.

The photos of the prints come after there has been multiple sightings of a big cat in the area.

One person who came up close and personal with one of these big cats with Toby Matthews, who said he was terrified in November 2020 when seeing it in woodland.

Talking about the moment, he said: "Maybe 50 or 60 feet away was an enormous black cat looking right at me.

"I took a photo then turned around and quickly walked back. I wanted to start running but was worried it’d give chase.

"I’m convinced that it was a puma. It was about two or three times the size of my little Labrador."

Just a couple months later, in January this year, there were reports that a "large cat roughly the size of a Labrador" was walking along a road near Talacte in Flintshire.

This was followed by a sighting 20 miles away from the castle in Pontybodkin, in which witnesses said they saw a black "dog-sized" cat.

With thoughts that there is a big cat on the loose, a group called Puma Watch North Wales has been set up to monitor the situation, with a number of sheep killings being investigated.

Speaking about the paw print photos in March, a spokesman for Gwrych Castle said: "We’ve seen reports of a puma roaming the surrounding woods of Gwrych Castle.

“This paw print was spotted in our woods last week. But what do you think, puma or dog paw print?”

The current campmates will obviously hope it is the latter.
