Fears food could run out because of mass isolation this summer

There are fears shops could start to run out of food because so many people are being told to isolate by the NHS App.

In the most recent week there were well over 500,000 alerts from the app warning people they have been in contact with someone who has Covid-19.

There are fears millions may be ordered to isolate over the summer as lockdown restrictions ease - but the rules on isolation stay in place until the middle of August.

The Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the number of new cases of Covid-19 could rise to 100,000 a day after lockdown lifts.

Experts fear that could mean 2million new cases over the summer - and 10million people being told to isolate for 10 days,

Tim Morris, chief executive of the UK Major Ports Group, told The Telegraph : “If the current trajectory of absences continues without the Government taking any action, there has to be a risk of disruption to important supply chains, including food.”

The Telegraph says meat producers are reporting one in 10 members of the workforce are now isolating.

Isolation has also seen everything from trains to bin collections cancelled.
