Fears as Bank of Ireland expected to announce mass branch closures

Fears are growing that Bank of Ireland will announce mass branch closures in March.

The organisation, which runs more than 260 outlets in the Republic, has neither confirmed nor denied reports about announcement.

However, the Irish Daily Mirror understands the numbers confirmed to be closing will be in the triple figures.

A spokesman for Bank of Ireland said: “Our operations are subject to ongoing review.

“We will provide an update on all aspects of our business at our Annual Results on 1st March.”

Bank of Ireland shut around 100 branches last year temporarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with 80 of these since reopening as part-time branches.

The Financial Services Union said it has engaged with the bank on a timetable for reopening of the branches.

Last summer, 14% of the bank’s workforce, around 1,450 full-time staff, were set to get a redundancy package and leave the bank.

However, it received over 2,000 applications for the scheme.

Speculation around the branches comes as Ulster Bank is expected to announce their future intentions for Ireland over the next few days.

At the start of February, FSU General Secretary John O’Connell said there is “great levels of anxiety and stress” following his meeting with the CEO of Ulster Bank.

He said a meeting between the union and the bank’s CEO Jane Howard provided no reassurance.

He said: “The CEO refused to answer any questions about the strategic review or to adequately respond to recent media reports about possible talks between NatWest and PTSB.

“The union left the CEO under no doubt as to the level of anxiety and stress that bank staff are under.

“The situation is now very serious.

“The threat of a closure or carve-up of the bank is growing, and this will seriously impact communities, customers, staff, and businesses all over Ireland.”
