Fearless 'cannibal' seagulls have taken over quiet city centre says shopkeeper

A shopkeeper says a gang of 'cannibal' seagulls have taken over a city centre.

Othman Al-muntaser said the birds are feasting on the carcasses of death birds because their usual sources of food have disappeared in the lockdown.

Pictures show similar scenes to famous film The Birds, with the gang of seagulls taking part in a feeding frenzy.

Mr Al-muntaser, owner of the Go Local store in Whitechapel, told the Liverpool Echo : "I felt sorry for them after they began eating bags of rubbish when I took the bins out.

"I had some out-of-date bread so I threw some of it out for them in the street and I couldn't believe the effect it had.

"They all came out of nowhere and began fighting over it. It was mad. They must have been super hungry.

"They were coming close to me and they weren't even scared."

Othman said that a customer had also reported seeing the seagulls gorging on dead pigeons in their hunt for food.

He added: "With so few people around, it's as if they've taken over the city centre."
