Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor known for her work on the Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell cases, was fired by the Justice Department. This led her to send a strong warning to her former coworkers: “Fear is the tool of a tyrant.”
Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, shared this message in a note to the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office, where she had worked for almost 10 years. Her firing happened at a time when there was public anger over Attorney General Pam Bondi’s choice not to release more files related to the Epstein case.
As found by Politico, she said, “If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain. Do not let that happen,. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought. Instead of fear, let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place. A fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power. Of commitment to seek justice for victims. Of dedication to truth above all else.”

While no exact reason was given for her dismissal, many believe it is connected to the political tensions around the Epstein investigation and the Trump administration’s close watch on her father. Some reports also say there was frustration in the administration over the split verdict in the recent Sean “Diddy” Combs sex trafficking trial, where Comey was a lead prosecutor.

Comey’s firing is the latest in a string of exits and dismissals of experienced Justice Department lawyers, some of whom were reportedly let go because of their roles in cases that upset the President, including those tied to the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The Trump administration is also reportedly looking into James Comey, who has had a long and combative relationship with the President.
During her time at the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office, Maurene Comey stressed her dedication to “making sure people with access, money, and power were not treated differently than anyone else; and making sure this office remained separate from politics and focused only on the facts and the law.” “Fear” She said, “was never really conceivable.”
