FCSB coach Teja sacked after second-place league finish

(Reuters) - FCSB coach Mihai Teja was sacked after his team, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, failed to win the Romanian league.

A former Steaua midfielder, Teja has been in charge since December when he replaced Nicolae Dica.

"I told him that we are breaking up, I don't have to reproach him," FCSB owner Gigi Becali said, adding that the 40-year-old would leave after failing to lead the club to their first title since 2015.

The team won the 1986 European Cup and are the most successful club in Romania with 26 league titles and 22 national cups. But they have finished second in the league four years in a row.

Teja previously coached several clubs in Romania, including Dinamo Bucharest as well as the U-21 national team,

CFR Cluj clinched their second straight Romanian league title, and their fifth in all, on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Universitatea Craiova.

The Transylvanian club moved on to 50 points, giving them a five-point lead over FCSB with one game to play.
