Members of FC Tokyo spoke with a child at a hospital via videoconferencing and shared what they were doing while staying at home amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The use of online communication began on Friday because the athletes, who have been staying home because of the pandemic, asked if there was anything they could do to help during this time. They then "visited" the Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center, where 10 of the club members visited last autumn, via videoconferencing.
The members who participated were Japan national team forward Kensuke Nagai, former Japan national team defender Masato Morishige, high school graduate defender Kashif Bangunagande and former FC Tokyo player Naohiro Ishikawa, who currently is the club's communicator. The four enjoyed talking to 10-year-old Ryo, who has been hospitalized because of a blood disease, for about 40 minutes.
"Ryo-kun was always smiling, so we enjoyed talking to him the whole time," Nagai said.
Morishige, meanwhile, demonstrated his training at home and said that online communication "is a lot easier compared to going there in person, so maybe we can do it more often."
