FC Copenhagen's Michael Santos banned after 'assaulting' police officer during Europa League tie against Celtic

FC Copenhagen’s Michael Santos has been banned for three matches by Uefa after being found guilty of “assaulting” a policeman during the club’s Europe League tie against Celtic.

The Uruguayan forward was charged by Scottish police after colliding with an officer while celebrating Pep Biel’s late equaliser in the Danish side’s 3-1 win on 27 February.

The policeman was attempting to prevent Santos from getting too close to Copenhagen’s travelling supporters at Celtic Park.

“The Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has decided: To suspend the FC Copenhagen player, Michael Santos, for a total of three Uefa club competition matches (including any matches previously and automatically served by the player to date) for which he would be otherwise eligible, for assaulting another person present at the match.”

Following the incident, Copenhagen said they were “waiting to see if Scottish Police pursue the case and will cooperate if they want more information from the club”.
