FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta Decides To End Nike Partnership

FC Barcelona (01)

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made a decision on potentially breaking the club's 26-year relationship with kit sponsor Nike, according to reports. The iconic partnership between Barca and Nike dates back to 1998, with Nike producing some of the most memorable Blaugrana shirts over the years.

Recent reports suggest that Barca has been exploring other options due to feeling underpaid by Nike. Competitors like New Balance and Puma have shown interest in potentially becoming the club's new clothing sponsor, with Puma emerging as the frontrunner.

Financially, Barca could benefit significantly from a deal with Puma, with reports indicating a potential $240 million cash injection, including a substantial signing-on fee and annual payments. In contrast, Nike's current deal with Barca is reportedly lower, with additional add-ons that are challenging to achieve.

The Barca board is reportedly divided on the decision, with Laporta leaning towards opening a new chapter after decades with Nike. Some members advocate for continuing the Nike partnership due to its global brand presence, while others suggest exploring options like operating without a sponsor or partnering with a smaller brand to maximize revenue.

Laporta's stance seems firm, despite Nike's attempts to improve their offer. By securing a lucrative deal with Puma, Laporta aims to strengthen his position ahead of the next presidential election.
