Sept. 01--The FBI has served a criminal search warrant at Palm Springs City Hall, an agency spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Later, documents covered by the warrant were recovered at the home of Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet, the FBI said.
Agents showed up at City Hall about 9 a.m. to serve the warrant and are being assisted by the Riverside County district attorney's office, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.
Eimiller declined to describe the reason for the warrants, except to say they are part of a joint effort by the Inland Empire Public Corruption Task Force. No one has been taken into custody.
Pougnet has been under criticism for months, after it was revealed in the Desert Sun newspaper that he was working as a consultant for a land developer when he voted in favor of selling city property to a company in which the developer is a principal.
The newspaper reported that Pougnet received more than $200,000 as a consultant for the company.
Recently the Riverside County Grand Jury announced it would not investigate Pougnet because he was already under investigation by "other investigative agencies." Those agencies were not specified.
Palm Springs City Hall was ordered closed as the search warrants were served.
