FBI: Security guard tackles, handcuffs would-be bank robber

Jan. 22--A bank security guard wrestled a would-be bank robber to the ground and handcuffed him at a Gresham neighborhood bank Tuesday afternoon, according to court documents.

Ryan McGee, 28, of the 300 bock of Whittier in Joliet faces a federal charge of attempted bank robbery in the foiled holdup at a Chase Bank branch, 8140 S. Ashland Ave., about 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, according to an affidavit filed by an FBI agent in the case.

The guard told investigators the man walked into the bank Tuesday afternoon wearing a surgical mask, went to a customer counter at the front of the bank and looked like he was writing out a bank slip, according to the affidavit.

The man went up to a teller and said something like, "Don't do anything stupid," while handing the teller a black plastic bag with a note attached, according the affidavit.

"Don't do nothing stupid," read the note, which was written on a white envelope. "Put the money in the bag." '

The teller, realizing the bank was being robbed, reached into the top drawer of the teller station and started to take money out, then made eye contact with the security guard, who nodded at the teller. The guard then walked over and asked the teller if everything was OK.

The teller stared at the guard with a frightened look, while holding the money, and the man began to run away, according to the affidavit.

The guard ran after the would-be robber, wrestled the man to the ground, and handcuffed him as the teller activated a holdup alarm and someone else called 911, according to the affidavit.

After authorities took McGee into custody, the teller and the guard described the robber to them, and McGee admitted he tried to rob the bank and identified himself in surveillance photos, according to the affidavit.

McGee is scheduled for a detention hearing Friday at 2 p.m., a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office said.
