Oct. 27--The FBI on Monday was investigating a suspicious package at Los Angeles International Airport that reportedly came from a Florida prison inmate and prompted authorities to evacuate an administrative building and nearby parking garages.
Explosives investigators were called to the building at 1 World Way about 8 a.m. after an airport employee looked through the frayed edges of the package, said Officer Rob Pedregon of Los Angeles Airport police.
Inside the envelope were documents and an improvised device, according to FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.
The parcel had been delivered Friday via the U.S. Postal Service and was not addressed to a specific person, Pedregon said. The package was allegedly sent with the name of Adam Baird, who is serving a life term in a Florida prison on an attempted murder conviction, unnamed sources told NBC News. It was not immediately clear if Baird mailed the package.
The package prompted authorities to evacuate the administrative building and two parking structures for more than three hours, Pedregon said.
The parcel was removed from the building by a robot and dismantled outside, where its contents were deemed safe.
The evacuations snarled traffic but did not disrupt flights or travelers, Pedregon said.
