FBI Conducts Search At John Bolton's Home And Office

The FBI headquarters building

The FBI conducted a court-authorized search at former national security adviser John Bolton’s home and office as part of a renewed investigation into whether he disclosed classified information in his 2020 book. The search drew criticism of potential political targeting, although the specific basis for the searches was not clear.

Bolton, who served as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser in his first term, was fired in 2019 and has since been at odds with the president. Trump had previously threatened to jail Bolton over his critical 2020 book, which led to a Justice Department investigation in Trump’s first term. The probe was closed under President Joe Biden.

The FBI was observed at Bolton’s house in the Washington, DC area, with agents seen entering and leaving the premises. The search also extended to Bolton’s office in downtown Washington.

The investigation involves the Justice Department reopening an old case related to Bolton's book and exploring other possible leaks. Vice President JD Vance denied political motivation, stating that the operation is driven by the law.

Bolton, a vocal critic of Trump's foreign policy, has been targeted by the administration, including having his Secret Service detail terminated. The Justice Department previously investigated Bolton over possible unlawful disclosure of classified information in his memoir.

In recent months, Trump's government has taken retaliatory actions against perceived political enemies, including former officials and critics. The FBI has launched investigations into other prominent figures, such as John Brennan and James Comey.

The public nature of the FBI search at Bolton’s house has raised concerns of political retribution. Top FBI officials posted cryptic messages on social media, emphasizing that no one is above the law and public corruption will not be tolerated.

If the officials are indeed referring to Bolton, it would signify a departure from the Bureau’s usual practice of not commenting on ongoing investigations. The search at Bolton’s house contrasts with previous searches, such as the discreet search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago for classified records in 2022.

Bolton, a longtime conservative and former Reagan and Bush administration official, has been a political adversary of Trump since leaving the White House in the first term.
