Feb. 18--FBI officials on Thursday announced a $5,000 reward leading to the arrest of a man wanted in connection with a Christmas Eve bank robbery on the South Side last year.
Damon A. Murphy was charged in connection with the armed takeover robbery of the TCF Bank branch at 223 W. 87th St. on Dec. 24, according to FBI officials.
Murphy, 32, was charged with one count of bank robbery in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court on Dec. 30, officials said. Murphy remains at large but was identified as a suspect after media coverage of the robbery, FBI officials said.
According to FBI officials, a co-defendant was also charged with bank robbery in a complaint filed Dec. 28, FBI officials said.
According to the criminal complaint filed in the case, two men walked into the bank at 12:30 p.m., and one of them pointed a gun at bank employees and announced a robbery, FBI officials said.
One of the robbers then grabbed an employee by the arm and took the worker toward a door near a secured area of the bank where money was stored.
After another employee opened the door, both robbers entered the secured area, according to the complaint. After emptying several teller drawers, the pair fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. No physical injuries were reported in connection with the robbery.
If convicted of the charges filed against them, each defendant faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Murphy is described as black, 5 feet 11 inches tall, 240 pounds with a light complexion and brown hair and brown eyes. He is considered armed and dangerous, officials said.
Anyone with information regarding Murphy is strongly encouraged to contact local police or the Chicago office of the FBI at (312) 421-6700.
