Fawlty Towers star John Cleese causes outrage after he criticises Irish language on Twitter

Comedian John Cleese caused outrage on Twitter after making critical comments about the Irish language.

The Fawlty Towers star took to Twitter to raise his concerns about the language and faced major backlash due to it.

He tweeted: “I love your use of words ! But, seriously, if an Irish 'bh' is a 'v' sound, why don't you write it with a 'v'? Of course, Bernard Shaw pointed out that in English, the word 'Fish' could be spelled G-H-O-T-I.”

Irish Twitter users took to the social media platform to tell John that the two languages are very different and emphasised that the Irish alphabet doesn’t include the letter ‘v’.

Other users used the opportunity to point out some English words that use the same technique.

This isn’t the first time John has caused trouble on Twitter as in May he tweeted: “Some years ago I opined that London was not really an English city any more. Since then, virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation.

"So there must be some truth in it... I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU.”

The actor and comedian has also previously said that Irish names “look like deliberate attempts to mislead innocent people.”
