Favourite funeral songs from WAP to Girl on Fire and new number one

A funeral song is perhaps one of the most poignant moments of the ceremony, with some choosing a sombre approach, and others choosing comedy.

Songs are a fabulous way to remember a person, and there’s definitely been some interesting choices from Brits.

Co-op Funeralcare have released their music chart, with a mixed range of genres and some rather controversial numbers.

Coming in at number one is “You’ll Never Walk Alone” by Gerry & The Pacemakers, a new entry, knocking Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ off the top spot.

The Gerry & The Pacemakers hit, which spent four weeks at number one in 1963, captured the nation’s hearts all over again last April when it was covered by Michael Ball, Sir Captain Tom Moore and the NHS Voices of Care Choir.

More upbeat choices such as ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac and ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman all entered the top ten.

As well as artists like Snow Patrol, Amy Winehouse and Christina Perri, all entering the funeral chart for the first time.

For those who wanted one last laugh, ‘W.A.P’ by Cardi B ft. Megan Thee Stallion and ‘F*** Forever’ by the Babyshambles were popular choices.

Other amusing choices include ‘Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead’ from The Wizard of Oz and ‘Girl on Fire’ by Alicia Keys.

Here’s the full list of the overall top ten:

  • You'll Never Walk Alone - Gerry and the Pacemakers
  • My Way - Frank Sinatra
  • Always look on the bright side of life - Eric Idle
  • Simply the best - Tina Turner
  • Supermarket Flowers - Ed Sheeran
  • Time to Say Goodbye - Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman
  • The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
  • Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Eva Cassidy
  • We'll Meet Again - Vera Lynn
  • This is Me - The Greatest Showman

For film & TV fanatics, the Vicar of Dibley theme tune was a brand new entry on the chart, as well as ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston.

Hannah Ingram-Moore, daughter of Captain Sir Tom Moore and co-founder of The Captain Tom Foundation, said: “My father loved the song ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ because, just like him, it was full of hope.

“Right up until his passing, his priority was always to make sure that no-one should feel alone or helpless no matter their age or life circumstance, and that’s one of the reasons he started to walk his laps of our garden last year.”

Sam Tyrer, managing director of Co-op Funeralcare, said: “Music plays such a big part in all of our lives, it’s no surprise that our favourite songs play a role in the way we say goodbye too.

“The songs we choose for a funeral all hold unique and personal meaning for ourselves and loved ones but naturally some songs remain more popular than others and we’re delighted to unveil this year’s music chart.”
