Moment giant 10ft 'tsunami' caused by wave machine smashes into terrified swimmers

A giant 10-foot 'tsunami' left 44 people bloodied and injured after being caused caused by a faulty wave machine.

The chaotic scene was filmed at the wave pool located Shuiyun Water Park in north eastern China on July 29.

Footage taken by visitors shows swimmers suddenly faced with the large wave produced by the wave machine.

The tidal wave, which was described as 'tsunami', can be seen sweeping away tourists, flipping them and their swimming rings.

The video shows visitors standing outside the wave pool running for their lives too as they realise the unusually large wave is going to splash over the barrier.

Tourists can be heard screaming as the water is launched over the barrier and a number of them are knocked over by the tidal wave.

Footage taken in the aftermath then shows a woman lying injured on the ground and bleeding from her legs.

A spokesman for the water park said in a statement: "It was caused by a mechanical fault. Only around 10 people were injured.

"The wave pool was closed for a day for repairs. It's already been fixed and will be open tomorrow."

Officials, however, said no fewer than 44 people were injured, with three remaining hospitalised with broken bones and serious abrasions.

The wave pool has also been shut by authorities for inspection.

It is unclear whether the injured tourists were refunded their tickets, which cost around £12.

The large wave pool is part of the Yulong Bay Scenic Area in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province.

The Yulong Bay Scenic Area opened in 2015 and includes activities such as a glass-bottom bridge, a theme park, a wave pool and horse riding.
