Faugheen joins Living Legends team at the National Stud

Racing great Faugheen has been moved to the Irish National Stud following his retirement.

The legendary 13-year-old has been added to the 'Living Legends' team and will be enjoying the rest of his days in the company of fellow greats such as Hurricane Fly, Beef or Salmon, Hardy Eustace and Kicking King.

Trained by multiple champion trainer Willie Mullins, Faugheen's final success came at the 2020 Dublin Racing Festival with victory in the Grade One Novice Chase.

He finished his career with 17 wins from 26 races, with 11 of those coming in Grade One company.

Ridden by Ruby Walsh and Paul Townend as well as David and Paddy Mullins, Faugheen earned over €1 million in prize money throughout his racing career.

His most notable success came when winning the 2015 Champion Hurdle as the mount of Walsh.

But his best performance came a year later in the 2016 Irish Champion Hurdle, with his showing earning him the rating as the best two-mile hurdler of the 21st century.

"Faugheen is indeed a legend - not just for his exploits on the racecourse, but for the place he occupies in many racing fans' affections,” said owner Rich Ricci.

“He has been an honour to own and while we will miss him, we are delighted he has retired to the wonderful Irish National Stud and can be seen and shared by the public."

Chief Executive of the Irish National Stud and Gardens Cathal Beale had high praise for the retired star: “It is a great thrill to welcome Faugheen to the Living Legends Team at the INS. A graduate of the Irish P2P field he became the highest rated hurdler of the 21st century but it was at Leopardstown Christmas festival where his incredible guts, class and determination to win were seen at their best.

"Like all the greats he will be measured not just by his wins but by his response to the many setbacks he faced throughout his career.”
