FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Florida Atlantic University canceled Tuesday night's graduation ceremony after a "credible threat" was found in a note stuck to a mirror in a women's bathroom on campus.
A staff member found the small sticky note at about 4:15 p.m. in the Business Building.
"It was a threat specific to our graduation tonight," said Chief of FAU Police Sean Brammer. "It would hurt the investigation if I told you the specifics of the note. We took it seriously and canceled the ceremony."
College President John Kelly said in a statement: "We immediately huddled and made the decision that we would cancel the graduation ceremony. I feel terrible for our students. I'm disappointed as well. One of my thrills of the year is graduation."
"My goal is to make it right for each person who was deprived of a memorable graduation."
Florida Atlantic University announced the cancellation via Twitter shortly before 5 p.m.
"The Student Union is being evacuated due to what law enforcement considers a credible threat," the tweet said.
Students wearing their graduation regalia could be seen streaming from the building on the Boca Raton campus where the commencement ceremony was to be held.
At about 5:30 p.m. the school posted an update on Twitter saying: "The investigation of FAU's Student Union continues. Updates will follow as information is available."
