Father who spent month in coma with Covid-19 getting married after 'miracle' recovery

A father-of-three who emerged from a month-long induced coma after falling ill with Covid-19 today described his survival as “more than a miracle”.

Patrick Galloway, 56, said he was told doctors had considered turning off his life support machine three times. He was in an induced coma in University College Hospital from March 23 to April 27 after being transferred from the Whittington, near his home in Archway.

Soon after he woke, his partner of 30 years, Cynthia Palmer, proposed to him via video and he agreed.

Mr Galloway, who had previously suffered two heart attacks, said: “I was told after that the doctors considered turning my life support off three times… The odds were overwhelmingly against me. It’s more than a miracle that I survived.”

The glazier said that when he woke he was confused, could not speak clearly and could not write legibly.

He said: “Cynthia video-called me and I recognised the face but could not work out who she was.

“She called again and I was more with it and she asked me to marry her. I said yes immediately.”

Beautician Ms Palmer, 51, said: “I had to propose to him, he is my right hand.”
