Father who killed 'devil-possessed' toddler to be released

The body of Imran Zilic was dumped in a disused mine shaft.

A man who killed his three-year-old son and dumped his body down an outback mine shaft will be granted day release from a mental health facility.

Aliya Zilic, 41, claimed he thought his son Imran was possessed by the devil when he slashed the toddler's throat in April 2008.

Zilic had earlier taken his son from the boy's mother's home in Perth, and dumped his body down the disused shaft at Coober Pedy in outback South Australia.

Zilic was found after a police search across South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, where he was taken into custody.

He was then extradited to South Australia.

During his murder trial, the court heard Zilic was psychotic and believed his estranged wife was working for the devil and that his son was the devil's helper.

The court was told that Zilic had religiously motivated hallucinations and heard voices, and that he had stopped taking anti-psychotic medication.

He was found not guilty by reason of mental incompetence and instead sentenced to life in a psychiatric facility.

But today South Australia's Supreme Court heard he would be granted supervised day release from James Nash House on 24 occasions per year.

The court heard the level of supervision could be reduced from two staff members to one, when the day releases are reviewed at a later date.

Zilic previously applied for day release in 2014.
