Father Ted musical in rehearsals as writers reveal show is almost finished

How about a nice cup of tea? You’ll need one after you read this.

A Father Ted musical is in the works, and it’s almost finished.

The popular 90s comedy will be revived for the “real final episode” by original writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews with co-writers Neil Hannon and Paul Woodful.

Hannon, frontman for The Divine Comedy whose track Songs of Love is used as the show’s opening theme, revealed the show is “extremely entertaining” and almost ready to be revealed to the public.

Speaking about the show on BBC Radio 2, Hannon said: “The musical is almost finished and writing wise we’re kind of in workshop now and it’s going along well.”

Last month Linehan revealed the show, called Pope Ted - The Father Ted Musical, had had its first “mini performance” and despite initial thoughts that it would need a full rewrite, he predicts it could be a “massive West End smash”. Careful now!

Linehan previously said the musical would draw inspiration from The Book of Mormon and would “go for the jugular”.

He later revealed: “It’s the real final episode of Father Ted. This is true and not one of my stupid jokes, I promise. Didn’t want to do something until the right idea came along. This was the right idea.

“Arthur and I have been laughing our arses off while writing it. Just like the old days.”
