Father-son killed in firework explosion near Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border

PUDUCHERRY: A father-son duo was killed, and three others were injured when two bags of country fireworks they were carrying in their motorcycle exploded accidentally at Kottakuppam in Villupuram district, near the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border on Thursday.

Police said K Kalainesan, 37, from Ariyankuppam known for its high decibel and cheap country fireworks in Puducherry was proceeding to his in-law's house in Koonimedu in Villupuram district with his son K Pradeesh, 7, carrying two bags of country fireworks, which he bought from the locality.

When he crossed Kottakuppam in Villupuram district, the fireworks in one of the bags accidentally exploded killing the father-son duo on the spot. The explosion was so intense that their bodies were torn into several pieces and were scattered a few metres away from the accident site.

Three motorists sustained severe burn injuries and were rushed to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer).

Villupuram DIG M Pandian and Villupuram superintendent of police N Shreenatha visited the explosion site and made preliminary inquiries. A team of forensic science experts combed the explosion site and took samples of the remains of the fireworks.

Police suspect that the fireworks might have exploded due to friction and excessive heat from the motorcycle.
