Father's tribute to tragic Leeds United fan killed in horror crash

The father of a teenager from Leeds who died in a devastating crash in Horsforth last year says 'Saturdays at football will never be the same'.

Matthew Walshaw, 18, was one of four men killed in the collision when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into an Uber taxi in June 2018.

An inquest, held to examine the deaths, heard that the car - a yellow Seat Leon - was on the wrong side of the road and could have been travelling up to 95mph.

The men, in the car with two girls who survived the collision, had left a house party a short time before the crash. All four victims had alcohol in their system. The driver, Caelan Megson, 21, was two-and-a-half-times over the legal drink drive limit.

Declan Grove, 19, was the other man killed in the collision. The driver of the taxi suffered serious injuries.

'He was kind, hard working and respectful'

Matthew was a Leeds United season ticket holder and went to games with his dad. The coroner’s court heard a statement from Matthew's father during the inquest.

He said Matthew was a 'talented sportsman who loved playing football and supported Leeds United.

'He had been going to watch Leeds play since he was four'

He said: “Sadly, Saturdays at football will never be the same again.

"Matty loved playing sports and would turn his hand to anything to give it a go. Football, however, was his first love.

"He had been going to watch Leeds United play since he was four."

He added: “Matty lived 18 fantastic years, living life to the full. He was kind, hard working and respectful.”
