Is your dad part of the new wave of folks who have recently flocked to the sport of fly-fishing, just brimming with enthusiasm? Or is he part of the old guard—quiet and competent, cagey about his secret fishing holes? Either way, I’m guessing Pop wouldn’t mind some new fly-fishing gear for Father’s Day. Below, some suggestions.

Hardy has long been a big player in the world of saltwater fly-fishing, especially when it comes to tarpon. The Zane Pro is the latest iteration of the company’s fine saltwater rods. What makes this one stand out? The diameter of the rod has been reduced, which means there is less wind resistance as you make your cast. $850

A great lightweight backpack for a fishing trip or an overnighter. The Bug-Out has roomy storage, entry from the top or side, a holder for your rod or water bottle and a place in the front pocket for a hydration bladder. $190

Bajio (“shallows” in Spanish) is a new company headed up by the former chief marketer of Costa. All of the Bajio glasses manage blue light, which is the biggest obstacle to clarity. The Nato goes even further in keeping out light, blocking it with oversized temples. Coolest thing about the sunglasses? They are made of 100% plant-based material, which makes them 100% biodegradable and recyclable. $250

Simms has long been associated with some of the best waders in the biz. Every year, the company seems to top itself with a newer and better version of the G3, putting in small but important touches—a better fit, better interior pockets, an anti-microbial finish in the stocking feet—that help keep their waders among the elite. $550

For years, I’ve worn Patagonia board shorts while wade-fishing or boat-fishing on the flats. They’ve served me well. But now Patagonia has produced a fishing-specific pair of shorts that do the job even better. The nylon is breathable and dries quickly. And the pockets—on the back and in the front—are well-placed. $90
Howler Brothers Shoalwater Tech Pants

Maybe your dad prefers wearing pants, and not shorts, on the flat? Howler’s Shoalwater pants are made of a nylon-spandex mix, for quick drying and ease of movement. There’s a pocket in the back and pocket for pliers on the side. And there are even bungee cords at the bottom hem to keep your pants closed at the bottom if that floats your boat. $99
Sunswell French Terry Hooded Sweatshirt

Even in the heat of the summer, there can be a chill in the early mornings and evenings spent on the water. Fend that off with this super-comfy hoody from Sunswell, which is made of 100% Pima French Terry fabric. $85

This excellent online magazine, produced by Todd and Kelley Moen, only seems to be getting better every year. Catch focuses primarily on photography and video content (Todd is among the fishing world’s best at videography), which works extremely well on the digital platform. $20 per year
Local Retail Stores

The past year-and-a-half has been very kind to the biggest online retailers, like Amazon, but not so kind to more local retailers. Here’s a gentle suggestion: Let’s show those local guys some love this Father’s Day and do our shopping there instead of with the big guys. Some ideas for you: Florida Keys Outfitters in Islamorada, Florida; Whitetail Outfitters on the West Branch of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania; Urban Angler in Manhattan; Gordy & Sons Outfitters in Houston; Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in Harrisonburg, Virginia; and Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, Montana.
