Father pleads guilty to baby daughter's manslaughter

Cataldo (left) will return to court on August 18.

A Brisbane father has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his infant daughter, who died nine days after suffering horrific injuries.

A post-mortem examination found two-month-old Lily Rain Cataldo had received multiple skull fractures, brain injury, rib fractures and a twisted arm in the days leading up to her death in May 2012.

Her father, 29-year-old Rick Cataldo, appeared at a brief arraignment hearing in the Supreme Court in Brisbane today.

When asked how he would like to plead to the charge of manslaughter he replied: "Um, guilty your Honour."

Cataldo's former partner and the baby's mother, 26-year-old Michelle Catherine Leask, was given a five-year wholly suspended jail term in April, after she too pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

There is no suggestion Leask played any role in causing the injuries, but she had failed to seek medical attention for the child until it was too late.

The court heard Leask had been subjected emotional and physical abuse.

At a court hearing in April, the baby's mother was described by a judge as "profoundly remorseful".

Leask's defence barrister said she had "undertaken remarkable rehabilitation" since the incident, including undergoing regular counselling and studying a Bachelor of Applied Science to become a counsellor.

Cataldo will return to court on August 18 and his bail has been enlarged.

A date for sentencing has not yet been set.
