Homeless campaigner Fr Peter McVerry has told of an attack which left him with a black eye after “a few digs” from someone looking for money.
The Peter McVerry Trust, the national housing and homeless charity, issued a statement earlier this week after reports that Fr McVerry was attacked at his home.
Speaking to the Irish Mirror on Wednesday, Fr McVerry said: “It didn’t bother me at all.

“A fella called to the door in the early hours of the morning, gave me a few digs, went off and I went back to bed.
“I’ve been in Ballymun 40 years and it’s never happened before so the next time it’ll happen it’ll be another 40 years’ time.”
Fr McVerry told how the individual was “looking for money” and returned to his home the following day to apologise.
He added: “We shook hands and that was the end of it as far as I was concerned.
“I’m doing fine.”
It’s understood gardai were not called over the incident at Fr McVerry’s Ballymun home.
Fr McVerry was speaking to reporters outside of Leinster House on Wednesday ahead of a planned national protest to take place on Saturday to highlight the cost of living crisis.
