Father of Newcastle attacker Miguel Almiron dismisses Atletico Madrid transfer talk as a 'rumour'

Speculation linking Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron with a move to Atletico Madrid is a "rumour from the Spanish press".

That's according to Paraguayan playmaker's father Ruben, who insists there has been no contact from the La Liga giants.

Recent reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes.net claim Almiron is attracting the attention of Diego Simeone, and the 26-year-old's agent Daniel Campos insists the attacker has been on Atletico Madrid's 'radar' since his time in the MLS.

Campos also claimed that talks had been held with the Spanish club's hierarchy - stressing nothing official had been discussed at this point - and that the former Magpies record signing has a 'high' release clause at St James' Park.

The speculation led to Steve Bruce being questioned about Almiron's future on Tyneside, with the United head coach issuing a hands-off warning for both the Paraguayan international and in-form Allan Saint-Maximin.

However, Almiron's father has dismissed the talk linking his son with a move to Spain, declaring there has been no contact between Atletico and the United forward.

Speaking on 970 AM radio station - via Paraguayan title La Nacion - Ruben Almiron said: "There is nothing from Atlético Madrid, nobody contacted him.

"Rather it was a rumour from the Spanish press."

Almiron is one of a number of injury doubts ahead of United's trip to Manchester City on Wednesday evening.
