Father of Manchester student rapist Reynhard Sinaga says his son's punishment 'fits his crimes'

The father of Manchester student rapist Reynhard Sinaga said his son's punishment 'fits his crimes' after he was jailed for life.

The 36-year-old, from Indonesia, was convicted of raping dozens of men, aged 17 to 36, over two-and-a-half years.

He was sentenced to life with a minimum of 30 years at Manchester Crown Court.

Speaking to BBC Indonesia, his dad Saibun Sinaga said: "We accept the verdict. His punishment fits his crimes.

"I don't want to discuss the case any further."

Born in Jambi, in Indonesia, Sinaga grew up in a well-off conservative Catholic family in Sumatra.

He studied in Indonesia before moving to the UK in 2007.

A friend who studied with him at the University of Indonesia also spoke to the BBC, describing him as 'popular'.

The woman, who didn't want to be named, said: "He was very social, friendly, easy to get along with and fun to work on projects with."

PHD student Sinaga lured drunk men back to his flat on Montana House, Princess Street, before spiking their drinks with GHB.

He then filmed himself raping them while they were unconscious, often multiple times for several hours.

The details emerged during a series of Manchester Crown Court trials spanning 18 months.

He was convicted of raping 44 men, and found guilty of sexually assaulting an additional four victims.

But detectives believe the true number of victims was at least 195.

Her Honour Judge Goddard QC said she was not aware of a case of sexual offending of such magnitude.

Sentencing him on Monday, she said: "The true scale of your offending may never be known, but the police have established there are 195 different males who appear to be unconscious whilst you sexually assaulted them on the films that you took.

“You are an evil serial sexual predator who has preyed upon young men who for the most part came into the city centre wanting nothing more than a good night out with their friends.

“One of your victims described you in his victim personal statement as a monster – the scale and enormity of your offending establishes that is an accurate description.”
