Father of Edinburgh pub shotgun killer 'stabbed' in early-morning murder bid

The father of a notorious Edinburgh shotgun killer was allegedly stabbed in a murder bid as he made his way home from the pub.

James Bain, 55, was reportedly knifed in the capital’s Gilmerton area as he made his way home from a boozer around 1.45am on Saturday September 12.

He suffered a serious injury and was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment, where he remains in a stable condition, reports the Daily Record.

Police are treating the incident as an attempted murder.

Detective Sergeant Steven Gray of Gayfield CID said: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing into the attempted murder and officers are currently carrying out enquiries in the local area, and checking CCTV footage to gather more information.

“I would urge anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the incident and saw anything suspicious to contact us as soon as possible.

“This is believed to have been an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the general public.”

Bain’s son Jamie, 36, was jailed for at least 22 years back in 2006 after gunning down 32-year-old Alex McKinnon with a sawn-off shotgun at the Marmion pub.

He also attempted to murder McKinnon’s brother-in-law James Hendry during the incident.

The killer's own son Jamie Jnr was also sentenced to four years behind bars in 2019 after knifing a pal outside a supermarket.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting reference number 0385 of Saturday, 12 September. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.
