A man has drowned while trying to save a child who slipped into waterfall rapids at a popular south-east Queensland tourist destination.

A 49-year-old Toowoomba man's body has been recovered after he tried to rescue his son and failed to re-emerge at Wappa Falls on the Sunshine Coast yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the location off Pump Station Road when the man did not resurface after diving into the rapid water at the waterfall, north of Nambour, just before 2:00pm.

The boy was pulled to safety and taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for observation.

Police divers found his father's body around 6:30pm.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

There are signs urging caution at the falls. (ABC News: Jessica Lamb )
