Father brutally tackles son’s wrestling opponent during high school match

A father has been arrested after he brutally tackled his son's opponent during a high school wrestling match in the US.

Shocking footage shows how Barry Lee Jones ran from the stands and shoulder barged the 17-year-old teen in the back, sending him sprawling on the mat.

The incident took place during a wrestling tournament being held at A.L. Brown High in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on Saturday.

Witnesses said that Jones had to be restrained by other adults in the room following the alleged attack.

He was subsequently arrested by officers from the Kannapolis Police Department who charged him with common assault.

According to officers, Jones became enraged when he saw his son being slammed to the floor during the match.

A referee had just given hand signals to penalise the teen for an illegal move when Jones bundles into the back of him, according to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

The 17-year-old victim, who is from the neighboring Southeast Guildford High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, was unharmed after the incident.

Jones's son - a student from Hickory Ridge High School - was also reportedly not injured following the incident.

Barry Lee Jones, of Harrisburg, North Carolina, has been charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct and was booked on a $1,000 (£700) secured bond at the Cabarrus County Jail.

A spokesperson for Cabarrus County Schools told WSOCTV: "We have expectations for student decorum and sportsmanship during athletic and extra-curricular events, and our expectations for spectators are no different," the spokesperson said.

"The actions displayed by a spectator at the wrestling match on Jan. 18, 2020, fall far below our expectations. We do not condone his actions."
