Father and son rescued after drifting out to sea on inflatable off Co Wexford

A father and his son were rescued on Wednesday evening having been brought out to sea on an inflatable.

The alarm was raised by the child’s mother after the two began drifting out to sea in Co Wexford on an inflatable.

Cahore Inshore Rescue were tasked by Dublin Coastguard by pager alert to assist a child who had gotten into difficulty on an inflatable off Cahore Pier.

Two persons were located on the inflatable and they had managed to tie the inflatable onto a buoy.

They were transferred to the lifeboat and brought safely back to shore.

Gerry O’Loughlin, Secretary of Cahore Inshore Rescue, said both were okay and neither reported serious injuries as a result of the ordeal.

The crew members were helm Donal McGrath, and crew Brenda Kavanagh and Sean Doyle, who launched to go to their assistance.

Already, John Leech, from Water Safety Ireland, has said there should be a nationwide ban on inflatable toys and boats following a rise in incidents at sea and on waterways this summer.

He was speaking after Arklow RNLI had rescued a man on a small inflatable off Mizen Head where he was taken aboard the lifeboat and returned to Arklow.
