A MAN who was stabbed in the head and chest during a frenzied knife fight and his 66-year-old father have been charged over the alleged attempted murder of a 27-year-old man at Cliftleigh, outside Kurri Kurri, earlier this month.

Bradley Maybury, 23, and his 66-year-old father Tony Maybury appeared in Cessnock Local Court on Friday, two weeks after they were allegedly involved in a stabbing at a home on Shalistan Street in the early hours of March 5.

Bradley Maybury - who police said suffered stab wounds to his chest and head - has been charged with attempted murder and causing wounding to a person with intent to murder, while Tony Maybury has been charged with being an accessory after the fact to attempted murder and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company.

Neither Maybury entered pleas or applied for bail on Friday and the matters were adjourned until May.

According to police, emergency services were called to the younger Mr Maybury's home at Cliftleigh about 1.50am on March 5 following reports two men had been stabbed during a fight.

Police would later describe it as a "significant and violent confrontation".

When they arrived, police found Bradley Maybury with stab wounds to his chest and head. He was treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.

A short time later, police were notified that a 27-year-old man had attended Maitland Hospital suffering stab wounds to his chest and neck, according to a police statement.

He was later taken to John Hunter Hospital for emergency surgery and was at one stage listed as being in a critical condition but has since improved and been released.

Bradley Maybury was also later released from hospital.

Officers attached to Hunter Valley Police District established Strike Force Abapo to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged double stabbing.

And following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives went back to the home at Shalistan Street about 1.30pm on Thursday and arrested Bradley Maybury and his father Tony.

They were taken to Cessnock police station, charged and refused bail by police.
